Getting Started with Research
How do I choose a topic??
Choosing a topic can be a challenging part of your research. Here are some things to think about when choosing a topic:
- What is the assignment your instructor has given?
- If possible, choose a topic that you are interested and curious about. You’ll be spending a lot of time reading about your topic, so if you’re interested, the process will be more enjoyable!
- Your topic is probably going to change and evolve as you research and read about your topic, don’t fret, this is a normal part of the research process.
- What do you already know about your topic? What don’t you know about your topic?
- Do some background research on your topic. Wikipedia can be a great place to get an overview of a topic, and can be useful when you are trying to narrow your focus. Also, you can read more about the topic by using the references that all Wikipedia pages have.
- Brainstorm different subtopics related to your larger topic to help you narrow your focus.
- Ask the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How about your topic.
